Spring is such a beautiful time of the year, the world waking up after its long winter’s nap and the colors coming alive. The planet as a whole gets new life breathed into it. Everything about it is amazing, beautiful, and new.
Growing up, spring was always about new life. We had a decent sized garden where we grew corn, beans, onions, and a bunch of other things. I remember we also had a raised garden where mom did tomatoes and strawberries. The spring is when we would prep and plant everything in order to have bountiful harvests. There were trees to prune, grape vines to clean up, and so much to do just to prepare.
And it was always worth it.
Time of renewal
Spring in Ohio is all about “April showers bring May flowers” and of course, temperatures all over the place. We joke that only in this area can you experience all 4 seasons in one day. This is mostly true in the spring and fall times of the year. The spring time and time of renewal for me also has a few other meanings, considering my daughter was born on the first day of spring.
In a lot of ways, that was a renewal of sorts. There are ten years between my oldest son and my daughter, and so there was a renewal of so many things as a mother. All the paraphernalia that comes with having a baby in the house again, a girl versus a boy, and so many other things. That alone was such a wonderful experience for me. My daughter was actually born the weekend of Easter that year, and the joke was that she was what the Easter Bunny left me in my basket!
Spring is a time of new growth. I enjoy watching the world come to life, the vivid colors that mother nature shows us in the spring are such a stark contrast to the drab colors of the winter. It is amazing to see the transformation of our world as the days go along. Each new plant breaking through the soil to bring us a new color, even if it is merely just a new shade of green, is an exciting thing to see and behold. The way everyone and everything comes alive, like waking up after a long nap in so many ways.
Winter time activities are aplenty, but in the spring? The spring is just the right temperatures outside to be active almost all the time. Not too hot, not too cold, and there’s so much to see and experience. It could be the same things you did the year prior at that time, but it is still new because it is a whole new year.
I love seeing the parks begin to fill up again, hearing children laughing and playing, adults going for long walks in the park and chatting about their days and thoughts. All of these things start slowly, but they ramp up through spring to a full blown amazing events through the summer. It is funny because the way that the world starts anew each spring reminds me of the first program they have you write… “Hello world!”
Some days it really is the little things that make me giggle.
This week, the challenge is to think about spring and what you enjoy about it. Take a moment and think about this time of year and find something that you can appreciate about the world around you.
